Formula 2 Adjusts Schedule to Compensate for Cancelled Middle East Races
Formula 2, the premier feeder series for Formula 1, is modifying its race calendar in response to the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. These events, originally scheduled for April, were called off due to the conflict in the Middle East.
The 2026 Formula 2 season features 14 race weekends, with most coinciding with Formula 1 weekends. While the 2026 Formula 1 season has been reduced from 24 to 22 weekends, the Formula 2 season will not be shortened.
To fill the void, the FIA has decided to relocate these two Middle Eastern races to the next available slots in the F1 calendar: the Miami Grand Prix on May 3rd and the Canadian Grand Prix on May 24th. This marks the first time Formula 2 races will be held in North America.
The 2026 Formula 2 season commenced in Australia last March, with Joshua Dürksen of Invicta, Noel León of Campos, and Alex Dunne of Rodin Motorsport reaching the podium.
The calendar shift in F2 means that Colton Herta, who has transitioned from IndyCar to Formula 2 this season with aspirations of moving to Formula 1 (he is also a reserve driver for Cadillac), will be unable to attend the Indianapolis 500 on May 12th, where he was expected to be a participant.
