The current heatwave affecting Europe is not only impacting humans but also causing distress to animals. In Belgium, pigs are suffering from the high temperatures, which have reached up to 38 degrees Celsius in certain areas.
Pigs generally thrive in temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius and struggle to regulate their body heat. According to Belgian farmer Sanders Palmans, the animals are attempting to cool down by lying on the cooler ground.
“It is too hot for them. They seek the cool and stick to the ground. That’s where it’s coolest,” Palmans explained to the media.
This extreme heat has triggered weather alerts in several European countries, with some regions expecting temperatures to reach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Sweden has also issued warnings regarding anticipated high temperatures in the coming days.
