Carlos Alcaraz, like Novak Djokovic, will not be participating in this year’s Mutua Madrid Open. The Spanish tennis star has confirmed his absence from the tournament due to a wrist injury sustained earlier this week, which also led to his withdrawal from the Barcelona Open.
“Madrid is my home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row,” Alcaraz shared on social media. “It hurts even more not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for your unwavering affection, and I hope to see you again soon.”
Alcaraz, who has won the Madrid Open in 2022 and 2023, will now miss the 2025 edition for a similar reason to this year’s absence. What appear to be minor injuries can escalate into serious problems if the player does not rest. “From today’s tests, it’s a slightly more serious injury than we all expected,” Alcaraz told the press on Tuesday after his withdrawal from Barcelona. “And, honestly, I have to listen to my body, do what’s best for me so that it doesn’t impact me in the future.”
Jannik Sinner remains in the tournament’s schedule. If he competes, he could further extend his lead at the top of the rankings. However, there is speculation that he might also withdraw to rest and return stronger for the Italian Open in Rome, scheduled from April 28 to May 17.
