The Chicago Bulls have announced their separation from Jaden Ivey, the 24-year-old guard acquired from the Detroit Pistons on February 3rd. The team cited “conduct detrimental to the team” as the reason for his release. Ivey’s dismissal follows an Instagram Live broadcast on March 30th, during which he declared that “Pride Month is an injustice.”
During the livestream, he further elaborated: “The world proclaims LGBTQ, right? They proclaim Pride Month and the NBA does too. They show it to the whole world. They say: ‘Come join us for Pride Month to celebrate injustice.’ They proclaim it on billboards. They proclaim it in the streets. Injustice.”
Ivey was originally the 5th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft but has seen his playing time severely limited by recurring knee injuries. He was traded to the Pistons just before the February trade deadline and subsequently appeared in only four games before being sidelined once again due to a knee issue. According to ESPN, Ivey was openly vocal about his Christian faith and was known to “preach” within the locker room.
In various Instagram Live sessions, Ivey reportedly spoke for extended periods on topics including religion, abortion, anti-Catholicism, and LGBTQ+ rights. Following these controversial public statements, he is now expected to face significant difficulties in securing a contract with another NBA team.
