Darwin’s Paradox! Blends Looney Tunes, Inside, and Ori.

Darwin’s Paradox! evokes the charm of classic adventure games from a bygone era, now reimagined for a modern audience. Its vibrant, cartoonish aesthetic is immediately inviting, a quality especially evident if you’ve had the chance to play the demo. During a conversation with Mikael ‘Mika’ Tanguy, Art Director, and Gilles Aujard, Gameplay Director, both from ZDT Studio, we were keen to understand how they revitalized this nostalgic genre for today’s players.

Aujard detailed their gameplay philosophy, emphasizing the goal for players to naturally discover new mechanics within each environment and level. He stated: “We’ve taken the core elements of classic platformers – precise movement, environmental puzzles, and narrative exploration – and infused them with modern technology and design sensibilities. We’ve also heavily focused on making the gameplay feel organic and intuitive, where each new environment naturally introduces fresh mechanics throughout the adventure. Every gameplay evolution is carefully integrated into the world and narrative, ensuring that new abilities and interactions always make sense, are justified, and seamlessly fit Darwin’s journey. The result is a game that honors the past while propelling the genre forward.”

Mika further elaborated on the visual inspirations for Darwin’s Paradox! He explained: “Visually, we’ve blended a cartoony charm with cinematic depth, drawing inspiration from classics like Looney Tunes and modern games such as Inside and Ori. The 2.5D perspective allows us precise control over pacing and narration, creating a linear yet deeply immersive experience. We’ve also removed traditional UI elements to deepen immersion, aiming for players to feel truly part of Darwin’s world rather than simply playing a game.”

Darwin’s Paradox! is scheduled for release on April 2nd across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
