Imagine the frustration of being trapped in purgatory, unable to reach the afterlife due to exorbitant ferry fees. This is the unique premise of Death By Scrolling, a roguelike RPG developed by Ron Gilbert’s acclaimed Terrible Toybox studio. Gilbert himself has taken on directorial, design, and programming roles for the project.
While the concept is intriguing, reaching the peaceful beyond is a perilous journey. The Grim Reaper actively pursues you through levels, creating a sense of being caught in a cosmic bureaucracy orchestrated by “Purgatory Inc.” This results in a game that is both challenging and, at times, hilariously fun.
Death By Scrolling Purgatory Inc. initially launched on Steam last fall, garnering positive user reviews. Now, a wider audience will have the opportunity to experience this roguelike RPG’s struggle to appease the Ferryman and cross the river into the other side.
The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series S/X on April 16th. PC players also have reason to celebrate, as a significant content update will be released simultaneously on all platforms. This update includes a new playable character, a brand-new biome to explore, and numerous gameplay and quality-of-life improvements.
