Denmark Secretly Prepared for Potential US Invasion of Greenland Under Trump

What sounded like a far-fetched scenario just a year and a half ago — Denmark preparing for a potential American invasion of Greenland — became a stark reality in early 2026.

According to reports from official sources within the Danish government, intelligence services, and officials in France and Germany, Copenhagen quietly spent the initial weeks of 2026 preparing measures to counteract a potential military takeover by its closest ally of eight decades. The preparations were striking: Danish soldiers were deployed to Greenland with explosives to disable runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, preventing American aircraft from landing. Also included were bags of blood from Danish blood banks, prepared for potential casualties. The destination was an island technically still part of Denmark; the potential aggressor: the United States of America.

The catalyst, of course, was renewed threats from former President Donald Trump in January to take Greenland “the hard way.” European capitals had been discreetly alarmed since the 2024 US election, but the moment that reportedly solidified the crisis was the American attack on Venezuela on January 3rd. The following day, Trump declared that the United States “very strongly needed Greenland.” The day after, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that an American attack on a NATO ally would signify the end of the alliance itself and the entire post-war security order.

Europe’s response was swift and, by the standards of European defense coordination, almost scandalously decisive. An advance contingent of Danish, French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish soldiers landed in Greenland, followed by a main force comprising elite troops. Danish fighter jets were scrambled, and a French naval vessel sailed towards the North Atlantic. According to sources, the deliberate objective was clear: to place as many different national flags as possible on Greenlandic soil, ensuring that any American initiative to occupy it would compel Washington to commit a hostile act against multiple NATO allies simultaneously.

“We have not seen such a situation since April 1940,” a Danish defense source stated, referring to the Nazi occupation of Denmark. The comparison was not made lightly. Amidst all this, something remarkable occurred: Europe rallied. Secret talks among European leaders, reportedly initiated immediately after the 2024 US election, brought the continent to a new level of strategic cohesion. An anonymous senior French official told reporters that the Greenland crisis marked a turning point: “Europe realized once and for all that we must be able to take charge of our own security.”
