The confirmation of Fox McCloud’s unexpected presence in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie came as a surprise to many, especially given his distinct universe. This intriguing inclusion has been interpreted by some as a revitalized interest in the Star Fox franchise, while others view it as a potential hint at a future Smash Bros.-themed cinematic venture.
Two iconic characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, Wario and Waluigi, have not yet received official confirmation for their involvement in the film. During their recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, who lend their voices to Mario and Luigi respectively, were directly questioned about this. In a playful segment where they used a red shell to signify “no” and a question block for “yes” to respond to various affirmations about the movie, Fallon posed the direct statement: “Wario and Waluigi are making an appearance.”
In response, both Pratt and Day simultaneously pressed both the “yes” and “no” buttons. While this ambiguous reaction is far from an explicit confirmation, it’s notable that it would have been straightforward to simply deny their involvement if they weren’t slated to appear, thus managing fan expectations. Their choice of this noncommittal answer strongly suggests that at least one, if not both, of these mischievous characters could indeed make an appearance in the film, which is set to premiere this Wednesday.
