For a considerable time, whispers have circulated that Square Enix was contemplating a full-fledged remake of Final Fantasy IX, potentially mirroring the successful revitalization seen with Final Fantasy VII. However, concrete developments have been scarce, and the Japanese publisher has never officially acknowledged such a project, perhaps because its realization remains uncertain, at least in the near future.
During a recent podcast episode, well-known leaker NateTheHate shed some light on these remake rumors, stating that the last he heard, the project was “still on ice.” This doesn’t necessarily imply cancellation but rather suggests that production has been halted while Square Enix conducts a deeper assessment of the title and the broader series direction.
While many Final Fantasy and FFIX fans might be surprised by Square Enix’s apparent hesitation, this strategic pause could stem from concerns about the series’ evolving demographics. Reports indicate that the player base for titles like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth in the United States may not include many players under 30. Naoki Yoshida, a veteran of the franchise, has also voiced similar observations, noting that younger audiences often show a lack of interest in Final Fantasy. This trend potentially makes a major FFIX remake a somewhat risky venture for the company.
Would you play a Final Fantasy IX remake if it were to happen?
