Jannik Sinner has significantly narrowed the gap on Carlos Alcaraz in the race for the world No. 1 ranking. Following his impressive “Sunshine Double” – consecutive victories at Indian Wells and the Miami Open – the points difference has shrunk from 3,150 to a mere 1,190.
As the clay-court season approaches, where Alcaraz will be defending 4,300 points compared to Sinner’s modest 1,950, it’s entirely plausible that Sinner could claim the world No. 1 spot even before Roland Garros.
The good news for Alcaraz is that he is guaranteed to retain his world No. 1 ranking for at least another week.
This dynamic, however, could swiftly change if Sinner triumphs at Monte-Carlo (April 5-12). Alcaraz was crowned champion there last year, whereas Sinner, having been absent from that tournament last season, has only new points to gain.
Should Sinner and Alcaraz both reach the final, it would be a direct showdown for global supremacy: an Alcaraz victory would ensure he retains his top spot, but if Sinner prevails, he would become the new world No. 1.
Currently, Sinner holds 12,400 points. A win in Monaco would boost his total to 13,400 points. Even if Alcaraz reaches the final, 350 points would be deducted from his current total of 13,590, reducing it to 13,240 points.
