Italy is reeling from immense disappointment after their four-time World Cup winning national football team was eliminated from the FIFA competition for the third consecutive time. The Azzurri fell to Bosnia in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time, marking a significant setback for the footballing nation.
Earlier, Italy had overcome Northern Ireland in the semi-finals. However, when Bosnia defeated Wales in the other semi-final last week, also via a penalty shootout, Italian fans were reportedly seen celebrating. This reaction was based on the perception that Bosnia would be an easier opponent than Wales. This perceived underestimation ignited a strong determination within the Bosnian team, who meticulously prepared for the match and ultimately found fortune on their side.
Despite Italy opening the scoring through Moise Kean, a crucial turning point occurred in the 41st minute when Alessandro Bastoni received a red card. Playing for over half the match, including extra time, with only ten men, Italy struggled as Bosnia capitalized on their numerical advantage. Tabakovic scored the equalizer, pushing the game into a penalty shootout. Unfortunately for Italy, both Bryan Cristante and Pio Esposito missed their spot-kicks, leading to a decisive 4-1 penalty shootout victory for Bosnia.
Alongside Italy, Denmark (also following a penalty shootout), Poland, and Kosovo were eliminated tonight. Meanwhile, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Turkey, and Bosnia-Herzegovina have successfully secured the final four available European spots for the World Cup.
