King Charles III to Visit US Amid UK Efforts to Mend Ties with Trump

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to undertake a state visit to the United States in late April, a move widely regarded as an effort by the British government to de-escalate tensions with Donald Trump. Buckingham Palace confirmed the royal couple’s travel, which coincides with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, before they proceed to Bermuda. The journey, scheduled to begin on April 27, will include a state banquet at the White House.

This significant visit occurs at a sensitive juncture for UK-US relations, which have been strained by disagreements concerning the ongoing conflict in Iran. Labour leader Keir Starmer has voiced opposition to increased military involvement and initially declined permission for American forces to use British bases for strikes, a stance that drew criticism from Washington.

Despite these diplomatic frictions, Donald Trump has expressed admiration for the monarch and welcomed the upcoming visit, describing it as “formidable” and highlighting what he perceives as a strong personal relationship. The British government is expected to leverage the monarchy’s considerable diplomatic ‘soft power’ to stabilize bilateral ties. This places King Charles in a delicate position, requiring him to navigate political divergences while upholding the Crown’s traditional neutrality.
