L’industrie technologique a perdu près de 80 000 emplois au premier trimestre 2026, et la moitié de ces licenciements est attribuée à l’IA

In the first quarter of 2026, the technology sector experienced significant job reductions, with approximately 78,557 positions eliminated between January 1st and April 1st. A notable portion of these layoffs, around 37,638, are directly linked to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and the automation of workflows.

The United States bore the brunt of these job cuts, accounting for 76.7% of the total losses, which translates to roughly 60,000 positions. It’s speculated that many of these redundancies were driven by an anticipation of AI-driven productivity gains rather than concrete evidence of such improvements. Experts suggest it could take up to a year before companies see substantial productivity boosts from AI.

Despite these trends, the necessity of human oversight in AI implementation remains crucial. As highlighted by Babak Hodjat, Head of AI at Cognizant, “You need that last mile to make all these systems work for a business. There’s going to be a ton of people coming out of school, unable to find work, and they don’t have the domain expertise. You’ve got to bring them in. You’ve got to have them learn on the job, how to use AI in different domains.”
