Friedrich Merz’s conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has secured a crucial regional victory in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The CDU led the vote with approximately 31%, allowing it to take control of the state government after 35 years of Social Democratic rule. This outcome provides a significant political boost for Merz nationally.
However, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) showed the most substantial progress, more than doubling its share of votes to approximately 19.5%, marking its best performance ever in Western Germany.
