Miyamoto Crushes Super Smash Bros. Movie Hopes, Teases More Nintendo Cameos

Ever since Fox McCloud’s appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, fans have engaged in extensive speculation. Is a new Star Fox game in the works, is a spin-off film being considered, or could this be setting the stage for a *Smash Bros.* cinematic adaptation, given the multitude of crossovers with other Nintendo franchises present in the movie?

While we don’t have definitive answers to these questions, one possibility now seems to be off the table. During a recent interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario, questions were raised about the viability of a Super Smash Bros. movie. The response is likely to disappoint fans who held onto this hope:

“Out of the gate, I’ll say unlike something like Super Smash Bros, I don’t think you’re going to have a situation [where] all the Nintendo characters would join. As you know, my rule is Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series.”

This is certainly disappointing news for many, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of cameos in Mario films. Quite the contrary, Miyamoto hints that more are on the way:

“As we were working on this film, I realized again how varied and multi-talented the Mario cast is. When we had some sort of ideas from Illumination about: ‘What about this character? What about that character?’ I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s right. We had this. Oh yeah, that’s right. We had this character.’ So it really reaffirmed the varied nature of the characters in the Mario universe. We have a lot of characters to make a film, and yet we wanted to add a little spice, a little secret cameos here and there. And you’ll see that there’s a secret character that plays an important role.

So I think there could be character introductions like that potentially in the future, something like that.”

So, what do you think of this news? Is it a good or bad thing that a Super Smash Bros. movie doesn’t seem to be on the agenda?
