Discussions among team owners about establishing a salary cap have sparked rumors of a player strike. The MLB notably stands as the only major North American men’s sports league without such a cap, a situation that fosters vast financial disparities across teams.
A prominent example of this imbalance is Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, who is projected to earn a staggering $127 million in 2026. A substantial portion of this – $125 million – is anticipated to derive from off-field ventures, including endorsements, commercial deals, memorabilia, and media appearances. This monumental sum positions Ohtani’s off-field earnings as one of the highest ever for an active athlete, trailing only Conor McGregor’s 2021 figures.
Ohtani’s off-field income alone exceeds six times the combined total of the next highest-paid players in MLB. Notably, the top six players on this list are concentrated among the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and New York Mets, underscoring the wealth disparity among franchises.
The substantial increase in top players’ earnings has led some team owners to advocate for a salary cap. However, this proposal has been met with staunch opposition from players, raising the specter of a strike.
