Poppy Playtime Interview: Fan Theories, Live-Action Film, AI, and the Future of MOB Entertainment

The story of Poppy Playtime has seemingly concluded. Or has it…?

Chapter 5 recently debuted on PC, with a console release planned for later. We had the privilege of speaking with developer MOB Entertainment to gain insight into the creation process of a Poppy Playtime chapter and to learn what the future holds for the series.

To this end, we posed several questions to Senior Director of Creative Development, George Krstic, covering Chapter 5’s ending, fan theories, the live-action film, the use of AI, and the ultimate question: what’s next for Poppy Playtime?

Are you surprised by the immense reception Poppy Playtime has received from fans worldwide?

While I haven’t been with Mob since the beginning, I can confidently say that the team is consistently amazed and grateful for the fan reception with each chapter launch. Even now, after five chapters, you wonder if the same level of excitement will still be there, but our fans and community are incredible. And it’s not just the quantity of players that surprises us; it’s the depth of engagement—the theories, lore breakdowns, fan art, speculation videos, all of it. Since Chapter 1, Mob hoped people would connect with the world and characters of Poppy Playtime. Seeing players continue to do so in the way they have is truly humbling and deeply satisfying.

The conclusion of Poppy Playtime has been a labor of love for years, but was the ending delivered in Chapter 5 always the planned conclusion, or did you refine and adjust the narrative as each chapter arrived?

Chapter 5 sets the stage for what’s next, but the journey to get there was, yes, certainly a labor of love. Internally, the foundation of the ending has been in place from the start, and we’ve always operated around a core narrative framework for the game. But as is the case with most media, whether video games, film, or TV, the final product rarely matches what was on the original storyboard. Details change along the way, so to speak. In that sense, a lot has evolved. As you build out chapters and spend more time with characters, you find richer ways to tell the story.

Have any fan theories or opinions altered the overall narrative you wanted to convey?

We pay attention to fan theories and speculative content because it’s a sign that people are truly invested in the game (and it’s fun to see what people get right or wrong!). But ultimately, the chapter-by-chapter narrative is guided internally based on what the team is building with mechanics, characters, and plot working hand-in-hand. That said, seeing how fans interpret certain details can influence how we clarify or deepen ideas later on.

How have you found the process of constantly having to outdo yourselves for each chapter’s events? Were there any ideas you conceived but ultimately didn’t make it into the game because they pushed the Poppy Playtime experience too far?

There’s definitely pressure to raise the bar each time. In Chapter 5, for example, certain plotlines reached their climax after a long build-up, and the pressure to get that right and make players feel like they got their money’s worth is intense. Iteration can be challenging, but our team here at Mob is incredible in how they’ve achieved such cohesion without feeling repetitive.

Regarding dropped ideas, we’ve had some that were perhaps too ambitious for the time, either technically or tonally. Sometimes something is cool in isolation but doesn’t serve the story. We’re mindful of that. Just because we *can* go further doesn’t always mean we *should*. The experience needs to remain consistent.

Now that the story has concluded, is there a particular moment that stands out to you, a specific part you look back on with pride?

Well, Chapter 5 sets up what’s next, so don’t put a pin in it just yet! But I can certainly say that while there are many moments that stand out across development cycles and moments of pride with the team, from a personal standpoint, I fondly look back on the moment I played Chapter 1 for the very first time. I’ll never forget the distinct fear I felt seeing Huggy stand behind me unexpectedly and creating that unsettling sense of impending doom. I mean, it’s a toy! You don’t expect to feel that with something so traditionally safe and wholesome. But it really set the tone for the entire series, and I remember that early moment truly making me understand what was possible with the premise of a game like this.

When can we expect Chapter 5 console editions to arrive, and what is the reason for console versions taking longer before launch?

Console development takes a bit longer due to certification processes, optimization, and needing to ensure the experience is right on each platform. It’s not a simple port. We want console players to have the same level of polish and performance as PC players. It’s a matter of quality control. We’ll have more specifics once everything is ready, but we’re looking at a release later this year.

What is the status of the Poppy Playtime live-action film development?

We’re working closely with our partners at Legendary Pictures and will share more information as soon as it’s ready.

What is MOB Entertainment’s stance on AI?

Our focus has always been on the people behind the work. The creativity, storytelling, and art direction that shape our games come from the talented artists, writers, designers, and developers on the Mob team.

Like many studios, we keep an eye on emerging technologies and tools that may support workflows in areas like research or administrative tasks. But when it comes to the creative core of our games—the characters, world-building, and player experience—those decisions remain firmly guided by human creativity and our team’s twisted imagination.

What’s next for the Poppy Playtime universe? Do you have other ideas you’d like to explore, spin-offs you’d like to bring to fruition, what’s the plan?

The world of Poppy Playtime is vaster than one factory could contain, but for now, we’re taking the time to reflect on Chapter 5, celebrate the launch with our community, and ensure that whatever comes next is deliberate. For us, there always has to be a story worth telling, not just because there’s demand. We care deeply about protecting the integrity of the universe.

Many thanks to George and MOB Entertainment for taking the time to answer our questions. As mentioned, you can play all five chapters of Poppy Playtime on PC today, with Chapter 5 arriving on consoles later this year.
