Project Hail Mary, the new science-fiction film starring Ryan Gosling, which portrays a hero saving the world with his unique approach, has emerged as the biggest cinematic success of the year so far. Without being derived from an existing franchise and without needing characters in spandex, the movie still managed to rake in an impressive $141 million globally during its opening weekend.
Reports indicate that $80.5 million of this total came from the domestic market, with the remaining $60.4 million generated from international territories. This achievement positions Project Hail Mary as the largest debut of 2026 to date, and notably, one of the biggest non-franchise global box office openings on record. It also represents Amazon MGM’s most significant theatrical launch, setting a high benchmark for the remainder of the year.
Elsewhere at the box office, Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ continues its strong performance, having accumulated over $240 million worldwide after the latest weekend’s figures. In contrast, ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,’ the horror sequel, experienced a more modest opening weekend, pulling in $11 million.
