Sevilla Sacks Matías Almeyda: Coach Fired as LaLiga Relegation Looms

FC Sevilla announced on Monday the dismissal of head coach Matías Almeyda. The 52-year-old Argentine coach, who previously managed AEK Athens, MLS side San Jose Earthquakes, and Mexico’s Guadalajara (and had a stint as a midfielder for Sevilla in 1996/97), ultimately failed to improve the club’s precarious situation. Sevilla currently finds itself in a relegation battle, sitting at 31 points, just three points and two places above the drop zone.

“FC Sevilla wishes to thank Matías Almeyda and his staff for their dedicated work during these past months and wishes him good luck in his future professional endeavors,” the club stated in its official announcement.

Almeyda was appointed Sevilla’s head coach in June 2025, signing a three-year contract set to run until 2028.

During his 32 matches in charge, his record included only 10 victories, 7 draws, and a significant 15 defeats. This occurred despite a notable 4-1 triumph against Barcelona earlier in the season. However, team performances significantly deteriorated, compounded by Almeyda himself receiving a five-match suspension last month after a heated confrontation with the referee during a match against Alavés.

Adding to their woes, Sevilla currently holds the unfortunate distinction of having conceded the most goals in LaLiga this season, with 49 allowed so far. Statistically, accumulating just 31 points after 29 matchdays marks Sevilla’s second-worst performance this century at this stage, with only the 2023/24 season (28 points) being worse. These figures are considered unacceptable for a club that proudly holds the record for the most UEFA Europa League titles, boasting seven, the latest of which was secured in the 2022/23 season.
