Mark Cerny, Sony PlayStation’s lead architect, recently revealed in an interview that Sony, in close collaboration with AMD, is actively developing AI-based frame generation technology for future ‘PlayStation platforms’.
The primary goal of this initiative is straightforward: to significantly improve game framerates without necessitating a substantial upgrade in hardware power. This cutting-edge technology leverages artificial intelligence to create intermediate frames that are inserted between the frames actually rendered by the GPU, thereby dramatically increasing the perceived visual performance and smoothness. This principle is well-established, mirroring how Nvidia’s DLSS technology operates.
This innovation is rooted in “Project Amethyst,” a joint venture between Sony and AMD specifically focused on developing a machine learning-driven graphics solution for PlayStation. The technology will build upon AMD’s forthcoming FSR Redstone package, which is set to include advancements in image upscaling, frame generation, and sophisticated reconstruction techniques particularly relevant for ray-tracing.
When pressed about the specific ‘PlayStation platforms’ this technology is intended for, Cerny remained rather elusive. However, one key detail was made clear: there are no immediate releases planned for this year.
“All I can say is that we have no further releases planned for this year. And I look forward to discussing this more in the future!”
