Sony’s Fairgames Reportedly Pivots to Extraction Shooter

While many of Sony’s live-service endeavors have been shelved, some projects are so far along they’re expected to launch despite the publisher’s reduced focus on multiplayer dominance. One such game is Fairgames, also known as Fairgame$. Originally presented as a heist shooter, it now appears to be undergoing a significant genre shift into a new multiplayer space.

According to Insider Gaming, Fairgames is being reimagined as an extraction shooter. The game’s Cargo Heist mode is said to heavily lean into this genre. Essentially, players will infiltrate a vault, gather cash, steal or intercept loot from other players, and then successfully extract as much as possible.

Extraction shooters are currently a trending multiplayer experience. With games like ARC Raiders reaching 12 million players, it’s understandable why studios would want to replicate such success. However, Sony launching a new extraction shooter around the same time as Bungie’s Marathon could present challenges, as there’s always a risk of games cannibalizing each other’s player bases. Ultimately, there’s only so much time players can dedicate to gaming each day.
