Sony Secretly Prepares Multiplatform Future Including PC, Mobile, and ‘Consoles’

Despite ongoing speculation that Sony might be scaling back its multiplatform efforts, particularly for non-multiplayer titles on PC, a recently unearthed Japanese job listing suggests a more expansive and complex strategy.

The job description reveals that Sony is actively working to enhance the PlayStation Network, extending its reach to encompass PC, mobile, and various consoles (implying a scope beyond just PlayStation). Furthermore, these cross-play initiatives are explicitly designed to support ‘hundreds of millions of people,’ a figure significantly larger than PlayStation’s current player base alone.

Sony states: “We are currently working to further improve communication functions that connect players worldwide and to develop new features (voice chat functions) for distribution across multiple platforms (console, PC, mobile).”

However, this ambitious vision appears to be in its early stages, and Sony offers further insight into its development progress:

Sony clarifies: “This project is in the contemplation and construction phase of a new server architecture, without being bound by existing frameworks.”

In essence, concrete results are likely still a considerable time away. It’s conceivable that Sony is preparing this comprehensive service in anticipation of the PlayStation 6’s launch, which, according to prevalent rumors, is currently projected for 2028.
