Street Fighter 6 Fans Outraged by Alex’s Controversial Storyline

Alex, a beloved character originating from Street Fighter III, was recently introduced as a new playable fighter in Street Fighter 6, rapidly gaining immense popularity. His inclusion, however, also brought with it a fresh narrative for players, which, regrettably, proved to contain highly problematic elements, sparking considerable controversy. (For those deeply invested in Alex’s lore within the Street Fighter universe, please consider this a significant spoiler warning.)

The heart of the dispute stems from the ending of Street Fighter 6’s arcade mode. Here, Alex is depicted marrying Patricia, and the couple is shown to be expecting a child. While seemingly innocuous on the surface, fans with knowledge of the extensive Street Fighter lore are acutely aware that Patricia is not only Alex’s adopted sister but also his second cousin. This deeply intertwined familial relationship is the core reason for the widespread fan backlash.

Alex and Patricia have shared a history since her infancy, developing a relationship akin to that of siblings. Adding to this complexity, Patricia’s father, Tom, served as a crucial paternal figure for Alex, who even affectionately referred to him as ‘Dad’. These revelations understandably ignited significant outrage among the fanbase, leading to a response from Capcom that many perceived as “tone-deaf” and culturally specific in its handling. As reported by Kotaku, rather than altering the controversial ending or offering an apology, Capcom chose instead to “rewrite” certain aspects of Alex’s established backstory.

However, Capcom’s revised narrative conspicuously failed to address the fundamental issue: Alex remains married and is expecting a child with a recognized family member. The updated lore merely introduced new details suggesting that Alex and Patricia had been separated for a period during their teenage years. This partial adjustment has left many fans perplexed, questioning how such a storyline could have been conceived and approved in the first place, and why Capcom appears to remain oblivious to the profound depth of fan concern and the inherently problematic nature of the narrative.

The gravity of the situation was succinctly captured and conveyed by X (formerly Twitter) user Shuckle, who created a compelling comic illustrating the complexities and absurdity of the storyline. (Original comic can be viewed via this link: https://x.com/ssshuckle/status/2037037926010200332)
