The Last of Us: Online Was 80% Complete When Canceled, Says Director

The profound disappointment experienced by developers who pour their heart, soul, and personal sacrifices into a project, only for an executive to unilaterally declare its cancellation, is deeply understandable. This very scenario unfolded at Naughty Dog with The Last of Us: Online, and new details are now emerging about the ill-fated title.

In a recent podcast interview, director Vinit Agarwal revealed that the game was ‘approximately 80% complete’ when the decision to cancel was made. He openly admitted the devastating impact this news had on him, stating:

“It was a devastating moment for me because I spent seven years working on this game, and it broke my soul. I honestly remember finding out it was canceled 24 hours before it was announced to the public. That’s how I found out the game was canceled, and it was simply unfortunate, and they had to do that because they have to control the messaging.”

Agarwal explained that the core reason behind the decision was the studio’s preference for a more secure bet over a potentially experimental concept:

“Basically, at some point, a decision had to be made. ‘Okay, either make this game or make the next game Neil Druckmann was leading, the president of the company…’ They had to choose the game that was kind of the studio’s bread and butter rather than this experimental game I was working on, which I believe was going to be really important, but unfortunately couldn’t see the light of day.”

Approximately a year ago, it was reported that Vinit Agarwal had departed Naughty Dog to establish his own studio in Japan. While his next project remains undisclosed, his move echoes a growing trend of prominent developers leaving industry giants to found successful independent studios. Notable examples include creators behind hits like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Death Stranding, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and The Finals.

We eagerly await news on Agarwal’s new venture and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
