Tim Roth Reveals He Took The Incredible Hulk Role Solely to Embarrass His Kids

British actor Tim Roth has become a significant figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently making a notable return as the Abomination. After his initial appearance in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, he surprised fans by reprising the role first in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and more extensively in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This comeback, occurring 14 years after his debut as the gamma-powered villain, was a shock not only to many viewers but also to Roth himself, who had never anticipated a future for the character or the role.

In a recent interview with Total Film, where he discussed his work on Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Roth candidly revealed his rather unconventional motivation for taking on not only The Incredible Hulk but also Planet of the Apes. His primary goal? To embarrass his children at school.

“[The Incredible Hulk] I did that originally so my kids would be embarrassed at school. I’ve done a few films like that. I did Planet of the Apes for that [reason] too, just to literally embarrass them at school.”

Regarding his more recent decision to return as Abomination for the Disney+ series She-Hulk, Roth cited his appreciation for lead actress Tatiana Maslany, stating, “I liked Tatiana [Maslany].” He also described the experience as “like a reunion,” given his past professional connection with Maslany’s husband, Brendan Hines.

Given Roth’s seemingly lighthearted and somewhat detached approach to his MCU involvement, fans might wonder about the likelihood of seeing Abomination again. When asked about potential future appearances, Roth offered a characteristically casual and open-ended response: “Yeah, go on. Be fun.”
