According to a senior White House official, U.S. President Donald Trump has been discussing the possibility of withdrawing some American troops from Europe. This consideration arises as tensions with NATO allies continue to escalate. It’s important to note that no definitive decision has been made, nor has the Pentagon been officially tasked with developing a withdrawal plan.
These discussions stem from growing frustration in Washington. Trump believes that NATO members have not provided adequate support on critical issues, including securing the Strait of Hormuz and backing U.S. geopolitical aspirations, such as those concerning Greenland. The talks follow a recent meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, which did not significantly alleviate the existing strains.
Currently, over 80,000 U.S. soldiers are stationed across Europe, forming a cornerstone of the continent’s security since World War II. A partial withdrawal would lessen American commitments without a formal exit from NATO. However, such a move could further challenge the alliance during what officials describe as one of its most precarious periods in decades.
