Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that he engaged in discussions with King Abdullah II of Jordan regarding a potential security partnership. The focus of these talks was on defensive measures against drone attacks, a pressing concern given the escalating tensions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Zelensky conveyed to journalists via Telegram that their conversation encompassed “the general situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region,” exploring opportunities for enhanced security collaboration.
Kyiv has been proactive in offering its specialized knowledge in air defense and drone technology to Gulf states seeking to fortify their protection against Iranian drone threats. President Zelensky underscored Ukraine’s invaluable experience, noting that four years of war against Russia, which includes confronting Iranian-manufactured drone assaults, has emphasized the vital necessity of a cohesive system to shield both its citizens and critical infrastructure.
These discussions with Jordan occur in the wake of recent defense cooperation agreements forged by Ukraine with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Zelensky is actively pursuing more extensive support from nations in the Gulf region, as Ukraine navigates uncertainties concerning Western military assistance and faces challenges in financing its indigenous weapons production.
