Following a recent visit to Washington, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko conveyed a more optimistic outlook regarding future relations between the United States and Ukraine, suggesting the possibility of continued US support. Svyrydenko specifically commented on US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who expressed favor towards reimposing sanctions on Russia and its oil.
“I believe that Secretary Bessent stands with Ukraine and advocates for Ukraine,” Svyrydenko told Reuters. “It was a very friendly discussion, and he is very supportive. I think all our counterparts here in the US… understand perfectly: preventing the circumvention of sanctions, and also strengthening sanctions, is an extremely important step that must be taken to weaken Russia.”
Earlier in the year, Ukrainian and American officials met in Florida with hopes of ending the war with Russia. However, these talks seemingly did not bring about the peace some had anticipated. Instead, Svyrydenko remains aware that the war is likely to be prolonged and that Ukraine requires guarantees before it can agree to any settlement with Russia.
“I dream that this war will end, but it will end… with adequate security guarantees, an adequate prosperity plan, with an adequate plan for reconstruction and recovery. This would give Ukrainians the opportunity to live the life they deserve because they have fought so hard,” she stated.
