Yoshihisa Kishimoto, Creator of Double Dragon, Passes Away at 64

The gaming world mourns the loss of a true pioneer, Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the visionary designer behind classic titles such as Double Dragon and Kunio-kun. He passed away at the age of 64 on April 2nd, a detail confirmed by his son.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you my father passed away on 04/02/2026. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me in my life. Please forgive us as we will hold a private family funeral. I hope you will continue to enjoy my father’s works, especially Kunio-kun,” his son shared in a heartfelt announcement.

Kishimoto was a dominant force during the golden era of arcade gaming. In the 1980s, he initially contributed to games like Cobra Command and Road Blaster at Data East. His career truly took off after moving to Technos, where he solidified his legacy with Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, known in the West as Renegade.

This groundbreaking title effectively established the foundation for the entire beat ’em up genre. Not content to rest on his laurels, Kishimoto followed up with Double Dragon, a game that achieved global sensation status and elevated the genre to unprecedented heights. A remarkable aspect of Kishimoto’s creative process was his deep personal connection to his work; his experiences as a teenager, reportedly involving street brawls, directly inspired the gritty universe of his games.

Yoshihisa Kishimoto leaves behind an immense and enduring legacy. His influence is evident not only in his beloved creations but also woven into the very DNA of the beat ’em up genre, which he profoundly helped to define and evolve.

Rest in peace.
