Though perhaps not the most widely recognized Nintendo veteran, Takaya Imamura undoubtedly stands among the industry’s giants. His impressive resume includes key artistic design roles for F-Zero and Star Fox, making him responsible for iconic characters like Captain Falcon and Fox McCloud. Imamura also played a crucial part in the creation of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
After retiring in 2021, Imamura has remained active in the game industry, even releasing Omega 6: The Triangle Stars just last year. He has also continued to share his insights on the gaming world, particularly concerning Nintendo. Recently, Imamura weighed in on the upcoming Zelda movie, which is expected to feature Link speaking for the first time. He appears far from convinced this is the right direction, stating (translated from his original comments):
“I’m a little afraid that the magic everyone has carried within them when it comes to Zelda will disappear the moment Link utters a word.”
While crafting a compelling Zelda film without a speaking Link would admittedly pose a significant challenge, Imamura’s concern is entirely understandable. Will our perception of Link fundamentally change once he is endowed with a more defined personality and a voice in Sony’s cinematic adaptation?
