Atlético Madrid is poised to make its first summer signing, focusing on a defender currently representing Spain at the World Cup: Alejandro Grimaldo. Notably, this marks his return to La Liga after a decade away.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old left-back will join from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of approximately €20 million.
This acquisition comes after Real Madrid’s late swoop for two players previously linked with Atlético: Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella. However, Grimaldo’s transfer is now confirmed, with a verbal agreement reached between all parties, including the transfer fee. Bayer Leverkusen is set to receive over €20 million, including add-ons, for a player they acquired on a free transfer from Benfica in 2023. Prior to this, Grimaldo played for FC Barcelona B between 2011 and 2015.
While Grimaldo may not have been Atlético’s initial top target, his versatility makes him a valuable addition. As reported by AS, he has been the most productive defender across Europe’s top five leagues in the last three years, contributing significantly to goals with 14 scored and 12 assists.
