While Sonos has recently impressed with its new offerings, showcasing its well-established ecosystem and sound quality, there’s still room for innovation in the wireless speaker market. Denon has stepped up with its ambitious Home series, introducing a line of speakers designed to provide a reliable and well-crafted audio foundation for any home. Among these, the Denon Home 200 stands out as the most compact option.

The Denon Home 200 boasts a visually appealing cylindrical design, clad in durable fabric with a sleek aluminum base. Its aesthetic is striking and modern. Operation is also intuitive, thanks to the responsive touch controls located on its top surface.

Internally, the speaker features a stereo configuration with dedicated drivers. It houses two 1-inch tweeters, angled slightly outwards, and two 3.5-inch woofers. Although these woofers are somewhat small, they are engineered for “long throw,” enabling them to move more air and create the impression of a deeper, bass-rich soundstage. Each of the four drivers is powered by its own Class D amplifier, and a DSP handles audio processing, impressively including full Dolby Atmos support.

Beyond Dolby Atmos, the Denon Home 200 supports high-resolution audio formats such as FLAC up to 192kHz/24-bit, WAV, ALAC, and DSD. Connectivity options are extensive, ranging from AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect to standard Bluetooth 5.2. Wireless music playback is also facilitated via Wi-Fi through the surprisingly robust Denon HEOS app, which proves to be more polished and reliable than initially expected. The ability to create stereo pairs with other Home 200 models is another notable feature.

It’s worth noting that while you can ask a Google Assistant device to play music on the Denon Home 200, the Google Assistant itself is not directly integrated. Amazon Alexa, however, is fully supported and can reside within the speaker. For Siri and Google Assistant, they function more as a relay, where audio can be sent to the speaker rather than the speaker directly executing smart home commands.

In practice, the Denon Home 200 is a pleasure to use. The HEOS platform presents a strong challenge to Sonos, and the speaker’s design profile is arguably more attractive than what many competitors offer, rivaling the appeal of brands like Bang & Olufsen. The inclusion of Dolby Atmos and direct network support for lossless formats and DSD adds a layer of versatility and advanced functionality. The added convenience of direct USB playback further enhances its appeal.

Ultimately, the Denon Home 200 delivers on its promise. Denon has lived up to its premium reputation with the Home series, creating a platform that aims to appeal to consumers seeking high-end hi-fi audio with Wi-Fi capabilities, positioned between the offerings of Sonos and B&O. It reliably delivers a rock-solid audio performance.
