George Russell, acknowledging a rivalry with Max Verstappen, offered a sporting perspective when asked about the possibility of Verstappen retiring from Formula 1. “Formula 1 is bigger than any one driver, so you wouldn’t want to lose Max, because I think we all enjoy racing Max,” Russell stated, as reported by the BBC.
Russell offered his thoughts on why Verstappen might be critical of the new Formula 1 regulations. He suggested that Verstappen and Red Bull may lack a competitive car, unlike Mercedes, which currently leads the Constructors’ Championship. Russell himself is second in the Drivers’ Championship behind his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. He expressed understanding of Verstappen’s frustration, noting that their career stages differ significantly, given Verstappen has already secured four world championships.
“The complaints he has now are different from those of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, because we are at the front of the grid. It’s entirely natural, and you understand and acknowledge the frustration,” Russell explained.
Russell admitted he did not enjoy driving the 2022 car, describing it as “big, heavy, and not nice to drive.” However, he did not voice similar complaints because he was winning. He continued, “I can totally understand why driving the Nordschleife would put a smile on his face. I’ve done hundreds of laps on the simulator. And I would love to have that chance to go for a race around the Nordschleife. But my goal now is to become Formula 1 World Champion. If I had four under my belt, I’d probably be doing the same thing, so he’s at a very different stage of his career.”
