German defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the rest of the World Cup due to a knee injury. The 26-year-old was injured during Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast and had to be substituted at halftime. He is expected to be sidelined for several months.
Despite his injury, Schlotterbeck will remain with the squad for the time being. Coach Julian Nagelsmann stated that Schlotterbeck’s presence off the field is valuable and that he will be missed for his exceptional defensive skills and build-up play.
Germany has been one of the strongest teams in the tournament, winning their first two matches with a strong goal difference. With no further replacements allowed, Nagelsmann will rely on Antonio Rüdiger, Jonathan Tah, Waldemar Anton, and Malick Thiaw for central defense.
Schlotterbeck is set to remain at Borussia Dortmund next season, having extended his contract until 2031, despite interest from clubs like Real Madrid.
