Replaced Developers Clarify “AI-Driven Adventure” Label

With artificial intelligence being a contentious topic among many gamers today, the term “AI-driven adventure” for a game might suggest that AI plays a role beyond just its narrative. While Replaced does incorporate AI, this is solely within the lore and story of its world, not in its art, coding, or any other aspect of development.

However, a recent, now-deleted post from an IGN review referred to the game as an “AI-driven adventure,” prompting the developers behind Replaced to clarify their stance. “This game uses zero generative AI. What IGN is referring to is the story which deals with AI in an alternate 1980s America. It’s 100% hand-crafted by humans,” the official Replaced account stated in response to a comment on the deleted post that labeled the game as “AI slop.”

AI continues to be a trending subject, sparking heated debates whenever it’s brought up. This can significantly harm a game’s reputation if players believe generative AI has been utilized. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid describing a game as “AI-driven” even if it features AI-related themes in its narrative. Given that Replaced is a title from a smaller studio, one hopes this mislabeling in a review has not caused undue damage. We would like this game to receive the recognition it deserves, as we thoroughly enjoyed it in our own review.
