While job listings rarely offer a complete roadmap of a developer’s future projects, attentive fans can often piece together subtle clues. Recently, a new job posting at Blizzard Entertainment has sparked widespread speculation and hope among the community: the potential for an imminent return of StarCraft.
The role, a Senior Game Designer position, is widely believed to be for an upcoming third-person, open-world shooter set within the iconic StarCraft universe. This aligns with details previously hinted at in Jason Schreier’s 2024 book, which delved into the developer’s projects. A key requirement for the position is 15 years of game design experience, along with proficiency in Unreal Engine. This latter point is particularly noteworthy, as most of Blizzard’s current titles, with the exception of Hearthstone, run on their proprietary internal engine. The emphasis on an open-world, third-person shooter makes it highly improbable that this project is related to the card game Hearthstone.
With BlizzCon set for September, the timing seems perfect for a significant reveal, such as a major StarCraft revival. Although a shooter might diverge from the real-time strategy genre that defined the series, it would still represent a new chapter for StarCraft. There’s also the possibility that Blizzard is exploring an entirely new intellectual property, as the company has historically shown a willingness to venture into new genres and settings, even if not always successfully, as was the case with the canceled survival game Everwild.
