In the early hours of this morning, Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles upon Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. The attack, as reported by the Ukrainian government to Reuters, caused damage to over 130 buildings and tragically claimed the lives of 21 civilians.
President Zelensky, who was visiting Ireland at the time, immediately returned to his country. He publicly accused Ukraine’s allies of failing to provide the promised air defense systems in a timely manner, which he believes could have mitigated the impact of these Russian attacks.
“If our partners had kept their promises in due time, I believe more homes and lives could have been saved today,” Zelensky stated. “All we are asking our partners for is simply to adhere to what we have agreed upon. We are not even asking for more.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense, on the other hand, asserted that the strikes were aimed at strategic military and energy installations, as well as Kyiv’s airport. They also indicated that Russia would intensify its efforts to maintain pressure on Ukraine and achieve its military objectives, which include the complete control of the Donetsk region.
With the NATO summit scheduled to commence next week, Zelensky expressed hope for progress towards a diplomatic resolution, potentially with the assistance of Donald Trump, who maintains a close relationship with Vladimir Putin. Historically, Putin has refused to engage in peace negotiations or relinquish his expansionist ambitions, which began over 123 years ago with the forceful annexation of the Crimean peninsula and other territories previously belonging to Ukraine.
