Israel has officially sanctioned the appointment of Roman Gofman as the new head of its intelligence agency, the Mossad. This decision was announced by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Gofman, who currently serves as Netanyahu’s military secretary, is slated to assume his new role in June 2026. He will succeed the outgoing director, David Barnea. Gofman’s nomination was initially revealed late last year and has now received final approval from the Israeli committee responsible for senior appointments.
A seasoned military general, Gofman gained recognition for his actions during the October 7, 2023 attacks. He is reported to have quickly mobilized to the southern border of Israel to assist communities that were targeted in the Hamas-led assault.
Gofman’s leadership of the Mossad comes at a pivotal time. Israel is currently grappling with heightened regional tensions and ongoing security challenges stemming from conflicts in the Middle East.
