Sonos Era 100 SL: A More Affordable Smart Speaker Option
Similar to many smartphone manufacturers, Sonos has consistently released more budget-friendly versions of its existing products to broaden its range and appeal to different price points. The latest addition to their lineup is the Era 100 SL, which, as its name suggests, is essentially an “SL” (sans microphone) version of the existing Era 100.
This primarily means you’re purchasing an Era 100 without the microphones used for voice assistant commands or Sonos’s Auto Trueplay feature, which actively calibrates the soundstage using these same microphones. There’s a slight quirk to consider right away: the pricing. The Era 100 SL launched at £170, only a little less than the standard Era 100. You’re not sacrificing much between the two models, but conversely, it’s not significantly cheaper. In fact, the difference is so minor that one might wonder, “Why not just include the microphones – you never know if you might need them later?”
That said, the Era 100 SL is indeed less expensive, and how much that reduced saving matters is a personal decision. The upside is straightforward: if you *know* you have no interest in microphones, then it’s an easy purchasing decision. This speaker, after all, remains brilliant. The setup comprises three Class D amplifiers, two angled tweeters, and a mid-woofer that’s 25% larger than the older Sonos One. These components are housed in the same matte black or white perforated grille, both of which look classy. It weighs two kilograms, is relatively compact at 18cm tall, and will undoubtedly find a place almost anywhere. It boasts Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, and AirPlay 2 support. Naturally, its integration into Sonos’s well-honed app ecosystem is seamless.
Everything from playback quality and reliability to functionality via the app is impressive, stemming entirely from Sonos’s stubborn insistence on keeping its speakers within its own software ecosystem. This has paid off, and using the Sonos app is now decidedly brilliant. It’s still nice to see Bluetooth connectivity here, and support for things like Spotify Connect or simply AirPlay makes the Era 100 SL instantly accessible. Despite all this, the aforementioned reliability is the main draw. Wi-Fi speakers tend to be… well, “flaky.” Suddenly they stop working, or suddenly they just don’t respond when you really need them to. But that’s not the case here, as in my opinion, Sonos always works, and that’s worth paying for.
The Era 100 SL is caught in a bit of a design dilemma. Perhaps Sonos should have stripped out a few more features to offer a speaker at a slightly lower price point, as the current saving feels rather minimal. But on the other hand, it really is a brilliant little speaker, and we didn’t miss the microphones during our testing period.
