The Surprising Effort Behind Farting Mechanics in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

The development of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, launching soon on Switch and Switch 2, involved some surprisingly extensive work, particularly when it came to the game’s more… gaseous features.

In a recent “Ask the Developer” feature on Nintendo’s official website, director Ryutaro Takahashi revealed that the team engaged in a spirited debate about whether Miis should be able to pass gas. “When talking about quirky habits, there was a big debate within the team about whether Miis should be able to… let out farts. (Laughter),” he stated.

This particular feature made it into the game, and the team was committed to getting the sound just right. Sound director Toru Minegishi explained, “We were really obsessed with getting the perfect sound,” though he admitted some of the results were “a little too realistic for my taste.”

The visual representation of flatulence also required significant attention. Art director Daisuke Kageyama mentioned the challenges, noting, “For a while, the fart effect looked like an explosion going off.”

Ultimately, the seemingly simple act of a Mii passing gas in the game was the result of considerable effort from a talented team, dedicated to ensuring the execution was just right.
