Alex Ovechkin, le légendaire joueur de hockey sur glace russe détenant le record du plus grand nombre de buts en saison régulière de la LNH avec 929 réalisations, pourrait avoir disputé son ultime rencontre. Les Washington Capitals ont conclu leur saison régulière mardi avec une victoire de 2-1 contre les Columbus Blue Jackets, un succès qui ne leur a toutefois pas permis de se qualifier pour les séries éliminatoires dans la division Métropolitaine de la Conférence Est.
Âgé de 40 ans, Ovechkin n’a pas encore officiellement commenté son avenir pour la saison prochaine. Cependant, de nombreux observateurs avaient anticipé une retraite au terme de la saison actuelle, son dernier contrat, signé en 2021, étant arrivé à échéance. C’est la première fois depuis 2014 que les Capitals manquent la post-saison. Ovechkin a disputé l’intégralité des 82 matchs de la saison régulière, une performance qu’il n’avait réalisée que quatre fois au cours de ses 21 saisons dans la ligue. Il a inscrit 32 buts cette saison.
Ovechkin a déclaré qu’il ne savait pas ce que l’avenir lui réservait, mais qu’il avait été très touché par le soutien des fans qui avaient fait le déplacement depuis Washington pour assister à ce que beaucoup pensaient être son dernier match. “Je peux entendre leurs encouragements pour moi et leurs cris ‘Encore une année !’. C’est important aussi. Cela montre beaucoup de respect. Alors, merci pour votre soutien”, a-t-il confié.
Malgré cette incertitude, il a déclaré à la presse : “J’espère que ce n’est pas mon dernier match”, comme le rapporte le site NHL.com.
Depuis qu’il a été le premier choix de la draft en 2004, Ovechkin a évolué avec les Washington Capitals, à l’exception de la saison 2012-2013 où il est retourné dans son club d’origine, le Dynamo Moscou. Il a remporté la Coupe Stanley en 2018 et a été sélectionné à huit reprises dans la première équipe d’étoiles.

Ovechkin stated that he is unsure of what the future holds but appreciated the fans who traveled from Washington to attend what many anticipated would be his final game. “I can hear their cheers for me and their yelling ‘One more year!’. So, it’s important too. It shows a lot of respect. So, thank you for your support,” he said.
Despite the uncertainty, he told reporters, “I hope it’s not my last game,” as reported by NHL.com.
Since being the first overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Ovechkin has played for the Washington Capitals, having joined them in 2005, with the exception of the 2012-2013 season when he returned to his original club, Dynamo Moscow. He won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and has been named to the First All-Star Team eight times.
