While fans, analysts, and bookmakers all have their own choices and arguments for who should be cast as James Bond to replace Daniel Craig, few possess the experience and insight of Debbie McWilliams when it comes to finding the right star for 007.
This casting director has been instrumental in the James Bond films for four decades, contributing to 13 of the 25 007 movies. Her involvement began with *For Your Eyes Only* in 1981 and concluded with *No Time To Die* in 2021. She was responsible for casting Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, and outside the Bond universe, she even discovered Daniel Day-Lewis. It’s safe to say she has a keen eye for talent and an understanding of what it takes to portray James Bond.
Given her track record, a question arises: with many prominent names currently in the running, such as Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson, and Callum Turner, who would McWilliams select? Frankly, she wouldn’t choose any of them.
In an interview with The Independent, McWilliams stated, “It’s absolutely vital that he remains an enigma. I don’t want any of them in the role of Bond because we know too much about them already. We want to know as little as possible about their private lives, because that’s what being a spy is. You don’t need to know where he shops, who his parents are, or where he lives. You never want to see him at home. And a crucial element of this is the nature of his job. He’s allowed to kill, and we have to believe he’s capable of it. If you don’t believe that, you lose the audience.”
With this perspective, several other popular contenders might be ruled out, at least if McWilliams’ past experience is a guide for the franchise’s future. Essentially, don’t bet your salary on Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Henry Cavill, Jack O’Connell, or likely even Patrick Gibson from *007 First Light*. However, Amazon is now at the helm, which could change things.
