An Attack in Syria Casts a Shadow Over French President's Visit
French President Emmanuel Macron is currently in Syria, marking the first visit by a European head of state since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. While staying at the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus, an explosion occurred just hours after their departure this morning, injuring approximately twenty people, according to Reuters. The French delegation had already left the vicinity and was unaware of the blasts until informed later.
The perpetrators of the attack remain unknown. This incident highlights the prevailing insecurity in the country since President Ahmed al-Sharaa came to power. Al-Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda commander who has since shifted his approach, is seeking closer ties with the West while working to rebuild Syria after more than 13 years of civil war. As a member of the Syrian Sunni majority, Sharaa has pledged to establish a new, inclusive order in Syria, ending over five decades of the Assad family's authoritarian rule.
Macron, who last year spearheaded calls for the lifting of Western sanctions against Syria, was accompanied by business leaders, including the CEOs of TotalEnergies and the shipping group CMA CGM. He stated that France is prepared to assist in the reconstruction of Syria's economy and banking sector.
