Marcus Lehto, a veteran from Bungie and the art director for the original Halo: Combat Evolved, who was instrumental in shaping the iconic Master Chief and the original Ring World, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the current depiction of the Ring World in Halo: Campaign Evolved. He describes its appearance as "really ugly."

Lehto explained that the original vision for the Ring World was to evoke a sense of a sinister, mysterious, yet awe-inspiring location. However, he feels the current version, as seen in the game's menus, falls short. Instead of being menacing, it now resembles a toy, lacking the intended threat and wonder.

Furthermore, Lehto pointed out a perceived misplacement of the Ring World. In the original game, the Ring World was strategically positioned at the edge of our galaxy, making it visible from a distance. The new Ring World, however, is placed in an anonymous location in space.

"Even though the Forerunner technology was metal (not stone), it was ancient, immense, alive, and a tomb for the horrors that hid within it. It had endured millennia of conflict. Yet, the game shows it as shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago," Lehto stated.

He elaborated on his critique, saying, "The main menu Ring is the most shocking thing every time you launch the game. It should convey immensity, darkness, mystery, sinister, but also awe. This new ring looks like a brand new shiny toy: out of scale, with no mystery, and really ugly.

"Moreover, from a game lore perspective, the CE Ring is located far out, at the periphery of the Milky Way galaxy, which you can see in the background."

Lehto also shared a comparison image of the two Ring Worlds. He prompts players to consider whether the new Ring possesses the same imaginative and unsettling qualities as the original. The post can be viewed on X.
