Atari partners with Universal for cinematic adaptations of 10 classic video games
Hollywood's race for intellectual property rights continues as Universal has struck a deal with Atari to secure the film adaptation rights for 10 iconic video games.
According to reports, this agreement will see 10 cult arcade titles reimagined as feature films. One project is already in development, with Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe attached to write the screenplay, and Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360 set to produce.
The 10 games chosen for this initiative are among the most legendary arcade titles ever created. While the most famous is undoubtedly Pong, the lineup also includes Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, and Yars' Revenge.
Commenting on the deal, Atari CEO Wade Rosen expressed the company's delight in collaborating with Universal. He stated that the partnership aims to "translate the spirit of our brand and our iconic games to a new medium."
This development follows an earlier interview with Rosen at Gamescom 2025, where he discussed Atari's foray into adaptations, acknowledging the "many opportunities" in the field, while also noting it's a "long process" to achieve success.
