Austria Joins Global Movement to Ban Social Media for Children Under 14
A growing global trend is taking shape regarding the use of social media by children. Australia was among the first to introduce a ban for individuals under 16, while Spain and the United Kingdom are also considering similar restrictions. In Asia, Indonesia has already approved new regulations that would prevent anyone under 16 from using social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Roblox.
Now, Austria is stepping forward, set to become the latest country to prepare a social media ban for its children. The proposed legislation goes even further than some others by including anyone under the age of 14.
The Austrian government has announced a comprehensive package of measures designed to protect minors from the harms associated with social media. This official bill is expected to be presented by the end of June.
Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler, leader of Austria's Social Democratic Party, stated that the government's initiatives will encompass a new age restriction, enhanced media education, and clear regulations for social media platforms.
The specific details of the rules Austrian legislators plan to introduce are yet to be revealed.
