Blizzard Employee Fired for Using Instant Kill Cheat in World of Warcraft
In the world of World of Warcraft, Blizzard employees are bestowed with the title of "Game Master." These individuals possess access to in-game cheats, enabling them to monitor servers, guilds, and other game aspects to ensure fair play and player enjoyment. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and one Blizzard employee unfortunately abused their privileges to gain an unfair advantage in Mythic Plus instances.
Mythic Plus is a challenging endgame feature in World of Warcraft where players team up with four others to conquer increasingly difficult dungeons. According to a statement from Kaivax, Blizzard's Community Manager, it was discovered that an employee provided their group with an illicit advantage by utilizing a developer-exclusive spell that allowed for the instant elimination of surrounding enemies.
"Our tools have confirmed what has been circulating in community discussions, and we have conducted a thorough investigation into this matter. We can confirm that this was the action of a single Blizzard employee, in violation of our Code of Conduct. This employee is no longer with the company, effective immediately. We are also taking action against the player accounts that were complicit in this violation," the statement, published on the WoW forums, read.
Kaivax elaborated that a select few developers have the ability to use developer-only tools on production servers to implement urgent fixes when necessary. Every instance of developer tool usage is meticulously logged to ensure its justification. In this particular scenario, it's evident that these uses were unwarranted, and the integrity of the game was compromised.
