Sunday's defeat marks his second loss in 2026 and his second in three matches overall. This outcome represents a disappointing conclusion to the hard-court portion of the season, especially following his earlier victories in Dubai and Melbourne.
Jannik Sinner Closes Gap on Carlos Alcaraz in ATP Rankings
Alcaraz's early exit provides a significant opportunity for Jannik Sinner to narrow the points gap in the ATP rankings. If Sinner were to win Miami, securing his third consecutive Masters 1000 title, the points difference between him and Alcaraz would shrink from 2,140 to just 1,240.
With Alcaraz defending a substantial 4,300 points on clay from his victories at Monte-Carlo, Rome, Roland Garros, and his final appearance in Barcelona, compared to Sinner's 1,850 points to defend over the next two months, Sinner has a clear opportunity to potentially reclaim the world No. 1 ranking.
Following Miami, both Alcaraz and Sinner are expected to compete next at the Monte-Carlo Masters, scheduled from April 5th to 12th, 2026.
