Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Fonseca in Miami, Compares Experience to His First Match Against Nadal in 2021
Carlos Alcaraz successfully navigated his very first encounter with Joao Fonseca, winning their second-round match at the Miami Open with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The world No. 1 rebounds after his defeat to Daniil Medvedev last week at Indian Wells and has already improved upon his performance at last year's Miami Open, where he was eliminated in the first round by David Goffin.
A year ago, Alcaraz experienced one of his most challenging losses, but it taught him the necessity of 'disconnecting to reconnect.' After an extended family vacation, he returned to the court stronger than ever, reclaiming the world No. 1 spot, securing nine trophies, and reaching three finals. Since then, he has only failed to reach the final in two tournaments.
Next up for Alcaraz, he is set to face American Sebastian Korda in the Round of 32 on Sunday.
Alcaraz Recalls Nadal 'Destroying' Him at 19
Alcaraz, though still very young at 22, possesses the experience that 19-year-old Fonseca currently lacks. The Spanish star is confident that the Brazilian teenager will gain invaluable lessons from his consecutive defeats against top players like Alcaraz himself and Sinner. He drew a parallel to his own initial experience playing against Rafa Nadal, where he felt utterly 'destroyed.'
"I think he has everything, great shots, a lot to improve, but he's definitely going to get there. Consecutive tournaments playing the world No. 1 and No. 2, I think that's really going to help him," Alcaraz stated.
"I remember when I played Rafael Nadal for the first time, and I remember how good that match was for me, even though I got destroyed," Alcaraz reflected, referring to a Round of 32 match at the 2021 Madrid Open. A year later, Alcaraz famously defeated Nadal at the same event, and later that year, he made history by becoming the youngest world No. 1 of all time at just 19 years old.
Do you believe Joao Fonseca will reach the level of Alcaraz and Sinner in the coming months or years?
