China Conducts Submarine-Launched Nuclear Missile Test in Pacific
On Monday, China's People's Liberation Army Navy successfully carried out a test launch of a nuclear missile from a submarine in international waters of the Pacific Ocean. The test utilized a dummy warhead and has drawn criticism and concern from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and notably, Taiwan.
According to the official Xinhua news agency, the exercise was described as a "routine launch" as part of China's annual training program. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the launch proceeded "safely, standardized, and professionally at all times." She added, "It is hoped that the countries concerned will not over-interpret this matter."
While the exact type of missile China launched remains unconfirmed, speculation suggests it could be a JL-3, an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching potential targets within the United States, launched from Chinese territorial waters.
Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, commented that this event occurs "within the context of China's rapid military rearmament, which lacks transparency and assurances about its intentions, contrary to what the region expects."
Taiwan directly characterized the incident as an attempt by China to intimidate the international community and warned of an "upward trend" in Chinese naval movements.
